Abstract

The post-COVID-19 respiratory era is defined by the ongoing transmission of SARS-CoV-2 alongside seasonal influenza. Severe illness primarily affects high-risk groups, such as the elderly, those with chronic diseases, immunocompromised individuals, pregnant women, and those residing in long-term care facilities. This brief communication suggests a seasonal, tiered strategy that prioritizes annual COVID-19 vaccination for high-risk groups, maintains universal flu shots beginning at the age of six months, and encourages co-administration of both vaccines before winter to reduce missed doses. Targeted use of RSV and pneumococcal vaccines, particularly among the elderly and those with heart or lung difficulties, helps to prevent lower respiratory infections while also boosting COVID-19 and flu prevention efforts. Health officials advise against delaying immunization during formulation transitions, as high-risk individuals benefit from any available dose rather than waiting for variant-updated products. Equity-focused ways to increasing coverage include pre-scheduled appointments, the incorporation of digital reminders into care systems, and on-site vaccines.
